Hotel history

Celebrate more than 375 years of tradition at this historic landmark in Old San Juan. Originally built as the first Carmelite convent in the Americas, the structure stood as a place of quiet devotion for over two centuries before beginning a new chapter in the mid-20th century.

In 1959, Robert Frederic Woolworth acquired the former convent and reimagined it as a refined boutique destination. His restoration added two additional floors and introduced 100 rooms adorned with Spanish-inspired furnishings. When El Convento opened its doors on January 27, 1962, it quickly became a favorite among celebrities, travelers, and locals, celebrated for its fine dining, intimate ambiance, and European charm.

In 1995, a visionary group of San Juan business leaders purchased the property and undertook an extensive restoration that preserved its historic character while elevating its modern comforts. The renewed El Convento reopened in January 1997 to widespread acclaim, earning recognition from Condé Nast Traveler and Travel & Leisure.

Today, Hotel El Convento continues to honor its rich heritage with the same timeless elegance, warm hospitality, and cultural significance that have defined it for generations.

1646

Hotel El Convento’s story begins in 1646 when King Phillip IV of Spain approved a petition by Doña Ana de Lansos y Menéndez de Valdez to establish a Carmelite convent in San Juan. Doña Ana, using her inheritance, funded the convent’s construction on her property, which had previously been a war hospital and religious school. Built by Colonial Spanish soldiers, the convent featured three-foot-thick walls, mahogany and ironwood doors, and a grand interior courtyard.

July 1651

The Monastery of Our Lady Carmen of San José was inaugurated, with Doña Ana becoming the mother superior. The convent housed nuns for 252 years, surviving wars and hurricanes, until it was vacated in 1903 due to costly repairs.

Dec. 9, 1903

The convent was closed by the Archbishop of San Juan. Over the next few decades, the building served various purposes, including a retail store, dance hall, and flophouse, before falling into disrepair.

1959

Under Operation Bootstrap, Robert Frederic Woolworth purchased the decayed structure and transformed it into a deluxe hotel named El Convento. The renovation added two floors, creating 100 rooms filled with Spanish-inspired furnishings.

Jan. 27, 1962

The hotel officially opened on January 27, 1962, and quickly became a favorite among celebrities and tourists alike, offering fine dining, luxurious accommodations, and international entertainment.

1970 & 1990s

By the 1970s, the Woolworth family decided to gift the hotel to the government in lieu of back taxes. Despite various management changes and renovations, the hotel struggled to maintain its former glory. In 1995, a group of San Juan business executives purchased the property and undertook extensive renovations, preserving the building's original charm while modernizing its amenities. The hotel reopened in January 1997, earning accolades from Condé NAST TRAVELER and TRAVEL & LEISURE
